The Slinky was accidentally invented in 1943 by Richard James, a naval engineer. While working with tension springs to develop instruments for ships during World War II, he knocked one off a shelf and observed its graceful, "walking" descent. Seeing its potential as a toy, Richard and his wife, Betty James, decided to produce and market it. Betty named it "Slinky," inspired by the dictionary definition of the word, meaning "sleek and graceful.
Vintage patent plaques are restored digitally reproduced images of the original patents, with the patent images sublimation printed on satin gold or silver metal plates.
