The LEGO Group was founded in 1932 by Ole Kirk Christiansen in Billund, Denmark. Initially, the company made wooden toys. The name "LEGO" is derived from the Danish words "leg godt," meaning "play well." In 1949, LEGO began producing plastic toys, including a precursor to the iconic LEGO brick we know today. In 1958 that the design was perfected with the familiar stud-and-tube coupling system, which provides a stable yet flexible connection between bricks.
