U.S. Patent No. 4,205,355 for the flexible disk drive, patented in 1980 by Kunio Hamanaka and Yoshiki Sakurai at Toshiba Corp., outlined the design and operation of a device capable of reading and writing data to flexible magnetic disks, also known as floppy disks. The flexible disk cartridge drives a pop-up arm urged in the direction opposite to the cartridge inserting direction when the cartridge is inserted in the apparatus with doors open.
