A corporate patent wall, often referred to as a “Wall of Fame,” is a visually impactful way to celebrate innovation, recognize inventors, and demonstrate a company’s commitment to research and development. Whether placed in a corporate lobby, executive suite, or R&D corridor, a well-executed patent wall is both a point of pride and a powerful branding tool. Here’s how to create one:

1. Define the Purpose and Location

Start by identifying the primary goal of your patent wall. Is it to impress visitors, boost employee morale, or serve as an internal recognition tool? The purpose will influence the design, tone, and placement. Common locations include entrance lobbies, hallways near engineering departments, or areas outside conference rooms. Choose a space with high visibility and enough room to accommodate future expansion.

2. Choose a Patent Plaque Style

Patent plaques come in a variety of styles, colors, and sizes. Selecting the best option for your Wall of Fame depends on your décor, available space, and desired visual impact.

Traditional walnut plaques with gold plates and patent front-page images remain popular. These are typically mounted using screws inserted into keyholes on the backs. Variations include black or cherry wood bases, silver image plates, or fully custom layouts instead of standard patent reproductions.

For a more contemporary look, consider plaques mounted with standoffs that “float” them slightly off the wall. These usually feature metal plates on acrylic backers available in various colors, offering a sleek, modern aesthetic.

To make a bold design statement, hexagon-shaped plaques can be used. These feature metal image plates (silver or gold) on matching acrylic back plates, mounted with color-coordinated standoffs in a honeycomb-style configuration.

Other mounting systems, such as tensioned cables or narrow display shelves, may be ideal when flexibility is needed to rearrange plaques or accommodate frequent additions.

3. Organize the Plaques

Most patent walls display plaques in a grid, arranged in chronological order. This works well for smaller collections. For larger portfolios, organizing by technology category, business unit, or product line can enhance clarity and engagement.

To add visual interest, consider grouping plaques by prolific inventors, including photos or brief bios. Plaques can also be placed near images or names of the products they support to highlight their relevance.

4. Plan for Growth

When designing the display, account for both your current plaque count and expected future additions. Use all available wall space efficiently and consider using multi-patent plaques—featuring four, six, or more patents each—if space is limited.
